KIM KYLMÄLÄ -Paintings
30.3. - 17.4. 2011

Press Release

AN INTERPRETER OF COLOURS AND SENSATIONS

Kim Kylmälä´s abstract works are born out of themselves, without a consciously set objective. Impelled by intuition, the artist works instinctively, and the end result is always a surprise even to its creator.

Colour is the most dominant element of Kim Kylmälä´s works, and he exploits it to the full. The glowing blue is partnered by orange and warm yellow. The colours melt into each others without sharp boundaries; red areas of colour hit the viewer with the power that is almost physical, sunny yellow melts into deep violet. Seemingly impossible, yet in Kylmälä´s deft approach, in his art these colour combinations are perfectly possible and right.

At the moment Kim Kylmälä´s most characteristic form of expression is watercolour on hand-made paper. Seeking to escape the fetters of the classical and geometrical canvas, the artist creates his watercolours on deckle-edged paper torn into uneven shapes. Some years earlier Kim Kylmälä was interested in collage and surprising combinations of materials. Now in today´s mixed media works the artist has returned to a collage-like form of expression.

While nature is an important source of inspiration, in his paintings Kim Kylmälä reflects his internal state of mind rather than copying reality. His works are highly emotional and alien to cool rationality. They are deeply personal, genuine and open to the interpretation of the viewer.
