MARKED IN MEMORY
During the process, a quiet force long hidden started to find a form in my work. Fractures of memories, of past moments rose as if the layers of my memory were releasing deep buried secrets.
In my pictures, I speak of the memory of an individual, the diaries of self. But I also speak of the collective memory of all humankind, which is like an ancient parchment with multiple layers, each revealing older and older fragments of shared memories common to all humanity.
To remember is to reveal, but memory is also charitable. How could a human tolerate remembering everything? Carry within her all what occurs around us every day – war, child abuse, what has been done to me and what I have done to others. This is the theme in one of my key paintings Uudelleen kirjoitettu muisti / Memories amended.
The underlying theme in my pictures is seeking – looking for something not quite there, like the entry in C. G. Jung´s diaries on November 12, 1913: “Meine Seele, meine Seele, wo bist Du? Hörst Du mich – ich spreche, ich rufe Dich“. / My soul, my soul, where are you? Do you hear me – I speak, I call you.
All pictures are acrylic on canvas. Some have also been finished with charcoal.
