RITVA TULONEN

Ceramic Sculpture 4.1. - 22.1.2012

Opening wed 4.1.2012 with performance by Helena Hukkataival

Press Release

Hideways and haunts

Ritva Tulonen is fascinated by caves and hollows. They are hideouts, shelters, refuges and retreats, even for the mind.

Ritva Tulonen uses furnaces heated up to high temperatures (1300 C) using wood. The surface of the sculptures is the result of heat, oxides and melting ashes. No glazing is used. She builds her ceramic sculptures of clay by hand, working slowly and meditatively, whereas the heating of the furnace is an intensive process both physically and mantally. All elements are present: earth, air, ether, fire and water.
